How to get your $1,200 Stimulus Check

Most Michigan residents are eligible to receive a stimulus check from the federal government this year.

The vast majority of people in Michigan can receive stimulus money approved in Congress’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act in March.

The act provides payments of $1,200 for each adult ($2,400 for a married couple) and $500 for each dependent child.

People who filed taxes in 2018 or 2019 and who have a bank account on file with the IRS don’t have to do anything to receive the money. But people with little to no income who do not typically file taxes are also eligible.

The University of Michigan has put together a handy guide for determining if you can receive money and how to do it.

A complicating factor is that payments are designed to be deposited directly into recipients’ bank accounts. Those without a bank account can apply for a physical check, but the IRS has indicated those could take up to five months to be delivered.

Recipients can also have payments deposited to a pre-paid debit card.
