Consumers Energy extends customer protections

The energy company will not disconnect power or gas for vulnerable people while the stay-at-home order is in effect.

Utility companies across Michigan are announcing customer protection measures will continue at least until the state’s stay-at-home orders expire after June 12.

That includes Consumers Energy, which provides gas and electricity service to much of southwest Michigan.

Among the protections, they will suspend disconnecting power to vulnerable residents because of inability to pay their utility bills. That includes waiving late fees for low-income residents.

They are, however, encouraging residents who are having trouble paying their bills to contact them by calling (800) 477-5050.
