Graphic Packaging supports local brewery with a pizza challenge

The challenge was simple: Make around 80 pizzas in an hour. The reward was cash for a struggling business.

Spencer Macko is both Safety, Environment and Health Manager at Graphic Packaging Inc. and a big fan of Final Gravity Brewing Co. in downtown Kalamazoo.

When he was looking for a reward for his employees, he looked no further than his favorite local brewery.

“We recognized that we could help a couple of small businesses while at the same time show appreciation to the employees that were coming to work every day,” said Macko.

He approached brewery co-owner Kevin Christensen with a proposal: Make about 80 pizzas in an hour four times over two days – a total of 350 pizzas.

Christensen thought they could do it, so at noon and midnight on two days in April he and his team cranked up the ovens.

“It was a long day,” said Christensen, “but in these kinds of times, you’ve got to do what you got to do.”

“When the opportunities come along, I’m not going to say, ‘Ah, that’s too much work.’ I’m very thankful to Spencer,” he said.
