Western Michigan University planning “substantial” layoffs

The coronavirus pandemic has cost the university millions and will result in large cuts.

Western Michigan University president Edward Montgomery said during a virtual town hall Monday that the university will cut a “substantial” number of its staff.

Officials said WMU has already lost $45 million and laid off 240 employees this year because of the pandemic.

Montgomery did not say how many staff will be laid off or when. He said university leaders are still analyzing the data.

“We will not be able to do everything we have been doing the way we have been doing it,” he said. “I appreciate that this is anxiety producing for everyone. And that for too many, the consequences have already been too real.”
