Judge won’t budge on gym reopening

A federal judge has refused to pause his order allowing gyms to reopen while the governor appeals.

Gyms and fitness centers are still on track to reopen Thursday after a federal judge rejected Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request to stay the order while she appeals.

On Friday, U.S. Circuit Court Judge Paul Maloney ruled that the governor lacked scientific justification for keeping gyms shut while allowing other businesses to reopen.

The governor’s office still plans to appeal the ruling, but not before some gyms restart business later this week.

A spokesperson for the governor, Tiffany Brown, told Bridge Magazine that Maloney is “playing a dangerous role (he) should not play: second-guessing and upending the data-informed decisions that have saved thousands of lives in Michigan.”
