Michigan sees highest new infection totals since mid-May

State officials reported 610 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, marking the highest one-day total in seven weeks. Michigan had 659 new cases on May 20

The new infection total is a sizeable increase after weeks of low numbers across the state. It brings the seven-day rolling average up to 444 cases per day.

While new cases are largely concentrated in the state’s largest counties, many smaller counties are also seeing an upward trend that is worrying health officials.

Kent County in West Michigan has had 481 new cases in the past seven days, quadrupling its number from four weeks earlier, according to Bridge Magazine.

Health officials are concerned about rising numbers as more people venture out into public places after months of stay-at-home orders. They are especially worried about the impact of Independence Day activities, though we won’t know that impact for days or weeks due to COVID-19’s incubation period.
