Governor orders job protections for COVID sufferers

The order requires employers to treat people sickened by COVID-19 as if they were on medical leave.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order Friday that requires employers to treat employees who have or are suspected to have been sickened by COVID-19 as if they were on medical leave.

The order allows such employees to stay home from work without fear of retaliation.

“It is still vital that employees feel empowered to make the right choice to say home if they, or someone they have been in contact with is sick,” said Whitmer in a statement. “These protections will help to slow the spread of the virus and save lives.”

The move comes as unemployment benefits expire for many Michigan workers sidelined by the virus and as Congress struggles to pass an extension of benefits.
