State reports 539 new COVID cases, 6 deaths

The state's total on Saturday was 799 cases and 21 deaths.

State health officials reported 539 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and 799 cases Saturday bringing the seven day moving average to 749 cases per day.

The state surpassed 100,000 total cases of the coronavirus on Friday, a grim reminder of the toll the virus has wreaked on the state since the pandemic began in March.

The state reported six new deaths on Sunday and 21 on Saturday. Seven of Saturday’s deaths were the result of reviews of previous death totals. As of Sunday, 6,473 people have died from COVID-19 in Michigan.

Kalamazoo County reported nine new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and eight on Thursday. The county only reports case counts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Western Michigan University reported 16 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. The case numbers are the result of tests conducted since August 9. WMU is encouraging staff and students to be tested before classes resume Wednesday.

The school plans to release total testing numbers every Friday on its COVID-19 dashboard.
