State reports worrying rise in COVID positivity rate

Officials reported 796 new cases of COVID-19 and an increase in the number of tests coming back positive.

State health officials reported 796 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, but a rise in the number of positive test results has some worried.

The positivity rate – the percent of tests that result in confirmed infections – rose to 4.4% from 3.5% just two days ago. It’s the highest rate since the end of May.

The increase in the positivity rate may be tied to an outbreak among prison inmates. The Michigan Department of Corrections reported 181 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday.

Officials also reported seven deaths – five of them new and two resulting from the reclassification of previous deaths.
