Michigan health officials report the death of a 2-month-old from COVID

The baby is the youngest known person to die from COVID-19 in Michigan and is one of only 20 people under a year old to die nationwide since the pandemic began.

State health officials have reported that a 2-month-old baby has died from the coronavirus.

Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun noted the death during a press conference Wednesday.

“Children are not spared from this disease,” she said. “Studies show that while children are less likely to get severely ill from COVID-19, they still can.”

“Almost 800 children across the United States have been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome … a disease associated with COVID-19 that can cause multiple organs to fail,” she said.

Officials won’t reveal more details about the death, such as date or location, in order to protect the family’s privacy.
