State reports 838 new COVID cases Saturday, WMU caseload doubles
State health officials reported 838 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday bringing the seven day moving average to 677 new cases per day. Officials also reported eight deaths with three of them coming from a review of previous death records.
There are no numbers for Sunday because the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced last week they would give their epidemiologists that day off.
Cases of the coronavirus have jumped at Western Michigan University where classes restarted last week. The university reported 37 new cases of COVID-19 among their staff and students on Friday. Those results come from tests conducted between August 23 and September 2.
That’s more than double the number reported the previous week. WMU reported 16 infections following tests conducted between August 9 and 22.
WMU conducted 1,895 tests between August 23 and September 2. The positivity rate was just under 2% making it less than the statewide positivity rate, which was hovering around 3% during the same time period.
