Tibbs Brewing to close

The downtown "nanobrewery" points to COVID restrictions as a cause of its decision.

Another Kalamazoo business is closing its doors permanently amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Tibbs Brewing Company announced Wednesday via its Facebook page that it is opting not to renew its lease on the corner of Burdick Street and Lovell Street next door to the State Theatre.

“Our current lease expires in December, and with the Covid restrictions weighing heavy on our minds, we have made the decision not to execute our extension option,” the business-owners wrote.

Tibbs plans a final blow-out October 3. It has applied to the City of Kalamazoo to open a social district, which would allow it to sell drinks to people who can then take them outdoors.

“This post isn’t meant to be sad and please don’t feel sorry for us,” said the owners on Facebook. “The success that we’ve had and the friends that we’ve made have far exceeded anything we imagined when we first started planning the brewery in early 2012.”
