10/5/20: 1,407 new COVID infections over Sunday and Monday

The state's average new case count continues to inch upward as hospitalization rates climb.

State health officials reported 1,407 new cases of COVID-19 over the course of Sunday and Monday raising the state’s seven day moving average up to 884 new cases per day.

The state also reported 15 new deaths from the virus during the same time period. The state is averaging about 12 new deaths per day.

Kalamazoo County reported 37 new infections Sunday and Monday, but the county is still coded “orange” according the Harvard Global Health Institute. The county is experiencing an average of 18.1 new infections per day per 100,000 people giving it the second highest rate of new infections in the lower peninsula.

Hospitalizations from COVID-19 increased by more than 100 over the weekend. The state reported 800 people with suspected or confirmed coronavirus infections on Monday. That’s an increase of nearly 300 since September 25.
