12/15/20: Kalamazoo’s COVID death count reaches new high

The county's average COVID death count has doubled in a week. New case counts have risen, too. While hospitalizations are dropping statewide, they haven't changed much in Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo County: Four more people have died from COVID-19 in Kalamazoo. That number was reported Tuesday and adds to the 11 deaths reported over the weekend to bring the county’s seven day average to 3.71 deaths per day. The number is more than double what it was a week ago and is the highest fatality average since the beginning of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, new case numbers have jumped slightly in Kalamazoo County. Health officials reported 111 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. That increased the county’s average to 84 new cases per day over the past week – reversing a recent trend that has seen the average decreasing steadily for more than a week.

While it’s an incomplete measure, Kalamazoo’s coronavirus hospitalization count has stayed worryingly stable. On Tuesday, Bronson Methodist Hospital reported it was treating 38 patients for COVID-19. That’s a jump of 14 people from the previous day, but puts it solidly in line with previous weeks’ daily patient counts.

Kalamazoo’s other hospital doesn’t publicly release patient counts, but a biweekly count from the state showed it had 47 COVID-19 patients on Monday, similar to numbers from previous weeks.

Michigan: State health officials reported 4,730 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, dropping the state’s seven day moving average to 4,631 new cases per day.

The state also reported 183 new deaths from the virus, with 71 of them coming as a result of a review of previous death records. The state’s average daily death count is still high – nearly 114 new deaths per day over the past week. Nearly 1,000 people have died from the coronavirus in just the past week.

Hospitalizations: The number of people being treated for COVID-19 continues to drop statewide. On Tuesday, the state reported 3,674 people were being cared for in state hospitals for the coronavirus. That’s 128 fewer than the previous day.
