Kalamazoo Marathon cancelled for 2021

Organizers decided to call off the annual marathon again next year citing COVID concerns.

The annual Borgess Run for the Health of It, which includes the Kalamazoo Marathon, has been called off for 2021. Organizers point to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as their reason for canceling the event.

The event, which includes a full marathon, half marathon, 5K run, and 5K walk, has been held in early May since 2011. Organizers would typically begin ramping up planning about now, but they don’t see the pandemic abating to safe levels in time for next spring.

Ascension Borgess has sponsored some version of the event since 1980. Its president, Peter Bergmann, said in a statement that they look forward to bringing the run back in 2022.

“Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our participants and volunteers made this decision unavoidable,” he said.
