6/14/21: State hits 60% vaccination

Average of deaths rise in Kzoo as new cases fall. Michigan's positivity rate is below 2% for the first time.

Vaccines: Michigan hit an important milestone over the weekend – 60% of the state’s population age 16 and up is at least partially vaccinated. The data comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meanwhile, Michigan is still inching toward a full vaccination rate of 50%. On Friday, the state reported that 48.7% of residents 12 and up had received both doses of one of the two-shot vaccines or one of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Rates are a little higher in Kalamazoo County. On Friday, the state reported that almost 60% of county residents had initiated vaccination, while 54% were fully vaccinated.

Michigan: Michigan’s positivity rate is again the lowest it has been at any point during the pandemic. In the week ending Friday, health officials reported that just 1.9% of COVID-19 tests conducted in the state returned positive results. The positivity rate has been on a steady decline for more than two months.

State health officials reported just 198 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. That brought the seven day average down to 255 new cases per day.

The state reported 53 new deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, with 50 of them coming from a review of previous death records. That caused the average to drop to 25 deaths per day over the previous week. The average of deaths has been declining for almost a week.

Kalamazoo County: Meanwhile, the average of deaths went up in Kalamazoo County.

County health officials reported on Friday that one person had died from the coronavirus. That brought the average up to 0.43 deaths per day over the previous week - that's three deaths total for the week.

At the same time, the average of new infections continued to drop. County officials reported just seven new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the seven day average down to 7.71 new cases per day.
