Get vaccinated, get $50

A clinic planned for Tuesday will reward recipients with $50 gift cards.

One of the more successful ways of getting people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 has been through incentive programs. Ohio, for example, is entering vaccine recipients into a lottery to win $1 million.

Michigan law prohibits the state from holding such lotteries, but that isn’t stopping local clinics from offering their own rewards.

A clinic planned for Tuesday will give the first 200 people to get their shot a $50 Visa gift card. The clinic is open to everyone 12 and older, but it’s being targeted at people who work in restaurants, retail, and hospitality industries.

“They’re around the public a lot. They serve food, they serve drinks, so it’s good to have that particular population immunized and keeping that environment safe, keeping restaurants open so they don’t have to deal with a closure as a result of a COVID outbreak or employees in quarantine,” said Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford in an interview with WWMT.

It’s the first time the county has offered incentives to people being vaccinated. Rutherford said the goal is to get at least 70% of county residents vaccinates, and we’re still about 10% short of that.

Tuesday’s clinic is scheduled from 3 to 6pm at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Kalamazoo.
