Mask mandate possible for Kzoo County schools

The county's health officer says a county-wide mask mandate for schools is possible if things get much worse.

A county-wide mask mandate for public schools isn’t likely, but it isn’t out of the question either.

Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford told WWMT that his department has the authority to issue public health orders, such as a mask mandate.

“It’s not something we take lightly because frankly any decision that is made right now in a very polarized environment will be a challenging decision to make,” he said.

However, the state isn’t likely to require students and staff to wear masks in schools for the same reasons. If COVID-19 transmission rates get much worse in Kalamazoo County, Rutherford said, the county Department of Health and Community Services may have to act.
