County cracking down on school not masking

As school outbreaks rise, county officials are taking action against one school not enforcing mask requirements.

Most schools in Kalamazoo County are diligently following health department orders requiring students and staff to mask indoors. But one school is flouting the rules and county officials may crack down on them.

County leaders won’t say which school it is, but the health department has been in touch with them to explain the rules. They said the school had until Monday to comply or face consequences.

The school isn’t the first to chafe at the county’s mask order. Last month, Climax-Scotts Community Schools said it would refuse to follow the order. The superintendent said the district’s location – straddling the line between Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties – meant it didn’t have to follow the requirement. The district eventually backed down.
