10/18/21: 101 new school outbreaks

New outbreak report includes 1 in Kzoo. Kzoo positivity rate back above 9%. State death average rising again.

Outbreaks: During the past week, 101 schools in Michigan experienced some sort of outbreak of COVID-19. That’s according to the latest report from the state’s Department of Health and Community Services. That’s in addition to 319 ongoing outbreaks throughout the state.

One of the newly reported outbreaks was in Kalamazoo County. Four students were infected at the private Gaggie School in Kalamazoo.

Seven other schools in Kalamazoo County are still being watched for ongoing outbreaks. They are:

  • Loy Norrix High School, Kalamazoo Central High Schools, and Hillside Middle School in Kalamazoo Public Schools
  • Portage Northern High School and Lake Center Elementary School in Portage Public Schools
  • KRESA’s WoodsEdge Learning Center in Portage
  • Heritage Christian Academy in Oshtemo

Michigan: The daily average of deaths from the coronavirus increased over the weekend.

State health officials reported 46 new COVID deaths on Saturday through Monday, with 15 coming from a review of previous death records. That pushed the seven day average up to 37.14 deaths per day. That’s the highest the average has been since the beginning of the summer.

The state also reported 8,496 new cases of COVID-19 over the three day period. The seven day average dropped by almost 100 to 3,638 new cases per day.

The state’s positivity rate continues to fluctuate, but has remained between 11.2% and 11.5% over the past week. In the week ending Sunday, 11.31% of COVID-19 tests returned positive results.

Kalamazoo County: The county's positivity rate has jumped back up above 9%. In the week ending Sunday, 9.41% of COVID-19 tests conducted in the county returned positive results.

Meanwhile, the average of new infections declined for the fifth day in a row. Health officials reported 155 new cases of COVID-19 over the course of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. That knocked the seven day average down by four to 80.86 new cases per day.

The county reported one new death from the coronavirus over the three-day period. As of Monday, five people in Kalamazoo County have died from COVID-19 in the past week.
